Solent 2050

A Bold Vision for Growth: The Solent Growth and Prosperity Strategy

The Solent Growth and Prosperity Strategy (SGPS), developed by the Isle of Wight Council, Portsmouth City Council, and Southampton City Council, lays out a forward-thinking roadmap for economic growth and prosperity across the region. Aligned with the UK Industrial Strategy and supporting the Government’s mission to “kick-start economic growth,” the SGPS aims to transform the Solent into a thriving hub of opportunity by 2050.

Why the Solent?
The Solent is a region of unique potential, encompassing the Isle of Wight’s distinctive island economy and the dynamic urban centres of Portsmouth and Southampton. While the area boasts significant strengths to drive economic growth, it also faces challenges that must be addressed to unlock its full potential.

The 2050 Vision
By 2050, the Solent will be Europe’s leading maritime region—a vibrant, modern, and well-connected area with a globally competitive, low-carbon economy. It will be home to world-leading firms, a thriving innovation ecosystem, and a highly skilled workforce, offering exceptional quality of life while championing sustainability and nature positivity.

Key Drivers of Growth: Place, People, and Business
The SGPS takes a holistic approach to productivity and growth, focusing on:
Place: Building a connected, sustainable, and attractive region.
People: Equipping residents with the skills to seize future opportunities.
Business: Supporting innovation, attracting investment, and fostering a dynamic business environment.

The SGPS is more than a strategy – it’s a commitment to creating a prosperous, sustainable future for the Solent region, recognising the importance of this geography as we explore a wider economic area under devolution.
