A Bold Call to Action for Inclusive Growth
HM Government’s White Paper “Get Britain Working” aspires to achieve an 80% employment rate by addressing six key issues:
In the Solent we have developed a regional plan, called Get Solent Working.
This regional approach is designed to tackle local challenges, work with agencies, businesses, and organisations in the area, and ensure that the strategies we implement are effectively tailored to meet regional needs and priorities.

Local areas have been asked to develop their own 10-year plans which will identify local labour market challenges and show how we will tackle these challenges, contribute to economic growth and meet the ambition of an 80% employment rate.
Locally the Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton have developed a plan for the Solent. Although Hampshire County Council are developing their own plan, we will work with them on shared opportunities and challenges.
These plans will support local strategies, including The Solent Growth and Prosperity Strategy Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Partnership Strategy and Local Skills Improvement Plans.
We submitted our plan in June 2025 but we continue to work with stakeholders to use this as a live document, developing it further.
The development of our Get Solent Working plan has involved key local stakeholders, including voluntary, community, and social enterprise organisations, housing associations, education and skills providers, trade unions and employer representative groups.
